We are so happy to have this past week behind us. Loren's moot court experience has been so crazy. I know we've told a lot of you about it but because I'm a terrible journal writer lately, I'm going to write it here. Sorry if I sound like a broken record!
We were truly amazed when we found out Loren had made it to the final four. It was beyond what he had hoped for and we became nervous, ecstatic, antsy, and terrified all at the same time. Loren spent the weekend hashing and re-hashing out his arguments. It was all he, and subsequently I, thought about for four days straight. Needless to say, by the time Tuesday rolled around I was more than happy to get the thing over with and bring sanity back into our lives.
At five thirty that evening we dropped Lydia off at Michelle's and made our way to the school. We were all dressed up- I wore a black dress I hadn't worn since before I was pregnant. Apparently this was a pretty formal event.
We walked towards the moot court room and I was amazed to see a long line of people waiting by the doors. The line had started around 3:30 and there were three classrooms open for overflow seating. I felt pretty VIP as Loren and I walked to the front of the line and, after going through security, were led inside. I had a reserved seat right on the front row. Yep, my husband rocks. This is one of the many proud wifey moments I get with him.
Finally it was time to start. I tried to calm my shaking hands and pounding heart as we stood for Justice Alito and the two other judges. He was definitely not what I expected in a Supreme Court Justice. I guess I envision old, white wigged men with rather large spectacles on the end of their noses. Justice Alito was just a regular guy. Young, and even friendly looking. Maybe this wouldn't be as bad as I thought.
After introductions, it was time to start. The two 3rd year students went first, followed by Loren and his opponent. As Loren got up and took his place at the podium, I felt like Mallory in the Sudio C episode called Pokerface. She looks cool and calm on the outside but on this inside she's saying, "Ah hahahaha! I'm about to get crazy up in here, like the WIND!"
Needless to say, I worried for nothing because Loren totally rocked it. He gave the best arguments I had heard yet. The judges asked him good questions which he answered while still keeping on track with his outline. I couldn't have been prouder. It was such an amazing learning experience for Loren, and not a bad addition to the resume. I took the camera wanting to get a photo with Justice Alito, but security was pretty tight and I wasn't able to.
All of the contestants, the moot court board, the judges and faculty went to dinner afterwards. It was fancy pantsy, and I silently thanked my young women leaders for dragging me to etiquette night so I would know my soup spoon from my dessert spoon. We enjoyed talking with the judge from Oregon and eating some great food. What a fun time. Loren and I slept really well that night.
Lydia's happy place. Kathy will never know how much I love her for putting rocks instead of dirt in our yard.Saturday we met with the law families group to carve pumpkins. It was so fun! I really enjoy the other families and it was a perfect day. We carved a kitty pumpkin for Lydia. She loved it.
Well we're gearing up for a big week of fall fun. Costume parties, a chili cook-off and downtown trick-or-treating are a few things in store. Life is so good. It's hard to find a time in my life when I've been happier than I am now with my little family in this beautiful place. We are so blessed. We love you and miss you all. Hope this week is a fun one for everyone!!
