We're happy to report that Loren survived the first week of orientation! Sunday night we had a bit of the jitters and Monday morning looked a little like this:
(Loren) The beginning of the end of free time as I know it. (haha, I was thinking, 'set it to manly' ...)
At orientation, I met a lot of my classmates. The incoming class has 112 people, most from the south, northeast, or california. I'm the only Utah in the bunch. We had some mock classes and they assigned about 1 1/2 hours of homework almost every night. The classes are not like undergrad at all, there's no assignments, you just read and brief (aka summarize) cases, find the important legal points, and in class the professors often "cold call" students randomly and ask questions designed to get at the heart of the issues. We'll see how it goes!
Wednesday was my doctor's appointment in Lexington. Everything check's out great and I was relieved to hear her heart rate back in the normal range. The next one will be next Thursday in Augusta so they can look at her on the ultrasound and make sure she's in a good position. The weeks are flying by and its surreal to think this little girl is coming in a few short weeks.
Thursday night we went to a picnic hosted by the law school for the 1L's and their spouses/significant others. It was fun for me to meet Loren's professors and fellow classmates. They all seem really outgoing and friendly. Afterwards, he showed me where his carol (area assigned to him for studying) is. It will be his home-away-from-home during the year and he'll spend at least 8 hours a day studying there.
After a big week we were ready for some down time. Friday night we decided to go to Hull's Drive-In, just a few minutes away from downtown. Hull's is one of the last community owned drive-in's in the nation and its fun to have it so close. It was such a fun atmosphere and experience! We had fun watching Percy Jackson and Planes.
The screen looks small, but really, it was huge. Fun night.
The next morning I went to a neighbor's house to look at some baby things they were selling. I have to say, we have been SO blessed with buying baby things. We've bought most everything for an amazing deal and have met many generous people. I ended up with a baby tub, carrier, pack n' play with a changing table, a bag of clothes, and a bassinet all under $70. We also received our carseat and stroller and managed to put up the crib. If this little one has any crazy ideas about coming early, I think its safe to say that we'll be ready for her! Its been so fun for me to organize her room. Once it's in some kind of order I'll post pics of it.
While I was in baby heaven, some members from our ward called Loren and asked if he wanted to go to the BYU v. UVA game with them as they had an extra ticket. It was a hard decision, but he eventually gave in! Loren had never been to a BYU game before which surprised me because of his deep love for his Cougars. Who knew his first game would be in Virginia?
These pictures are for Rachel and Lindsay, and Brayden too -- The UVA marching band was sweet, and a guy on horseback swinging a sword wasn't bad either. I didn't know this, but UVA fans call themselves "Wahoos."
There was a 2 hour lightning delay after the first quarter, and once the game started again, we all got drenched in the rain. BYU lost, but fun anyway!
Fun side notes, we're picking up on the Virginia vocabulary a little bit. You know, the simple stuff like ya'll, pocketbook, ma'am ... commode ....
See ya'll next week!
